a short blog to learn a little about me and my work

A blog to learn a little about me and my work

My Story

Hi and welcome!! My name is Criseida Becerra, I’m an artist from Wichita, Kansas. I’m a first-generation Mexican American. A lot of my inspiration comes from my parents who migrated here from Mexico at a young age for a better chance at life. I have two brothers and I am the middle child! I am also blessed to have a wonderful life partner who helps me reach my dreams. My love for art started in Elementary School (I entered my first contest in 5th grade and lost… sad) My love for art was heightened in High School thanks to my amazing art teachers. The teacher that made me believe in my artistic abilities was Mr. Kelly, he still teaches art to this day which makes me happy to see.

Artist, Model, and Nurse (random trio I know)

Apart from being an artist, I’m also a Registered Nurse and a model. I graduated from Wichita State with my Bachelor's of Science in Nursing, and recently signed with a modeling agency M&I Models. I love to express myself, thrifting, spicy foods, nature, Halloween, scary movies, making connections, and making my loved ones laugh.

My Favorite Art Mediums

My favorite mediums to work with are colored pencils and really any blendable paint, such as oils or gouache. I love building layers!! The reason you haven’t seen any oil paintings from me recently is that some of the oil paint mediums trigger my migraines and I don’t have a well-ventilated art studio. I have recently found oil paints that are more on the neutral side, so hopefully you will be seeing some oil paintings from me in the near future!

My Values

I’m a passionate creator who believes in the power of using my voice. I am vocal about equality, women's empowerment, and the importance of creating spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, valued, and respected. These values guide both my work and the way I show up in the world, and always will.

Thank you for taking the time to learn a little about me :-)

Inspiration Behind My Work

If I I had to make it short I’d say: femininity, humanity, nature, and most importantly my Mexican roots. Speaking up and using my voice for those who are not able to is extremely important to me. Being a minority in the U.S. comes with its challenges, but I use those challenges as fuel to create, to grow, and to help others whenever I can. I also find inspiration from other artists and in minority or women business owners who pave their own way. When it comes to nature, for me it is a source of healing, inspiration, and serenity. I see all the wonderful things nature has to offer and it is the only thing that is able to keep me level-headed.

A lot of my works have a deeper message, but it doesn’t mean they all do. Sometimes I just sit down and let my creativity flow, usually, my graphite drawings are the ones where I let this happen. I use them as a space to experiment, relax, and practice new techniques to keep improving my skills. These drawings are often inspired by tattoo-style art or focused on single objects that let me play with soft, detailed shading. I love drawing patterns (hence the snakes) and fruits! Anything that allows me to have fun shading and create depth is enjoyable to me.

The works that take me longer to complete often hold the most emotional depth. I feel deeply, I see intensely, I hear vibrantly, and I express greatly with no limits. I love to write poetry and my art is like poetry being brought to life.

In my works you will repeatedly see bold red tones. The red tones in my works represent my femininity, the courage my mom taught me to have, and the deep passion I carry for the things I love. The cool tones such as the green and the blues you see in my work are usually inspired by my love for nature. You’ll see a lot of deep purples and pinks, these usually accompany my red tones a lot of the times and add a softness to my works. The last set you’ll see repeatedly in my works are bright, joyful colors which are usually inspired by my Mexican culture. When I think of my roots, I picture vivid flowers, beautiful fruits, colorful patterns, and the beautifully crafted dresses that reflect the spirit, strength, and beauty of my people. I don’t use all the tones for every piece, but some you’ll see almost every time is the red tones.

Thank you for taking the time to learn the basics behind my works. Until the next blog. <3
